According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football. London), Inter Milan have identified Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui as the replacement for Chelsea target Denzel Dumfries.
This could indicate that the Italian club are willing to part ways with a player that the Blues really want. Dumfries has been on the club’s radar for quite some time now and it makes even more sense now.
The Blues have only Reece James as a natural right-back in the squad and his tryst with injuries has really been unfortunate. Even now, he has relapsed after just 60 minutes of football and we don’t know how long he will be out for.
This could prompt Graham Potter to dip in the market in January for a right-back and who better than Denzel Dumfries to fill that void. The Dutch fullback is as close to a replica as you can get for James.
Dumfries has shown us time and again how good he can be. He is excellent playing for Inter and often keeps getting forward and chipping in with goals and assists and he is also very consistent for the national team.
The talented Orange fullback dropped a performance to remember against the USA in the World Cup Round of 16 where he was involved in all three of the Netherlands’ goals.
The only question mark with signing Dumfries would be how well he can play in a back four which entails a completely different set of responsibilities to what he does when playing in a back five.
Potter has shown an inclination to move away from the system that Thomas Tuchel used at Chelsea for much of his time and whilst Reece James is equally comfortable in either system, we still don’t know that about Dumfries.
It remains to be seen how much the Blues are keen on signing Dumfries. He seems to make a lot of sense as a player with immense potential but his adaptability needs to be factored in before Chelsea sanction this deal.
