Speaking on Talksport Radio (h/t Mirror), pundit and former Chelsea player Jason Cundy believes that Brazil superstar Neymar doesn’t get anywhere near England and Blues star Mason Mount.
Cundy explained his belief by stating that Neymar is not a team player and won’t do the dirty work off the ball, which Mount does. He also touched on why the former left Barcelona for Paris-Saint Germain as he was not the main man there.
It is a bizarre comparison to make between two players who are good in their own right, but Neymar has been a superstar of the game for a number of years now. Mount is still finding his page in the elite stage.
Here’s what Cundy said regarding this comparison (h/t Mirror):
“Neymar doesn’t get anywhere near a team I want to support because it’s him, he’s not a team player.
“I’ll tell you why – Neymar won’t do what Mount does. Neymar won’t do the dirty work. He won’t do that. If you’re a team player you can’t get in the team. Can you imagine if Neymar was English in that [Gareth] Southgate squad? Can you imagine the disruption, what it would do, the effect it would have? He’s not part of the gang.”
The former Chelsea defender went on to explain why Neymar left Barcelona:
“Look what he did, he left Barca because he couldn’t compete with Messi. He turned up at PSG, Mbappe turned up and he’s not even the best player at PSG. It’s about him, it’s more than just the player.”
We know how important Mount is to Chelsea. He has been an exceptional servant of the club in the last two seasons following the breakthrough campaign on loan at Derby County.
However, some of the things Neymar can do on the ball are incomparable. The Brazilian is always in the spotlight amongst defenders, yet he finds different ways to hurt them through goals and assists.
While we love Mount, if given a chance, we would not mind having the PSG man. At times, a football team can have a player who may not always roll his sleeves up to do the dirty work, but play to cause havoc among opposition defenders.
One can understand what Cundy is trying to imply through his explanation, but it is an overstatement to say that Neymar does not even come near Mount. As a matter of fact, Mount can learn a thing or two from the Brazilian on how to be effective in the games even when surrounded by defenders all the time.
