A View From The Bridge

Journo mentions total fee Chelsea would have to pay to sign Graham Potter

Report: The whole package to hire Graham Potter will cost Chelsea £20m

According to a tweet from John Cross of the Mirror (h/t Football.London), the whole package to complete the hiring of Graham Potter as the new Chelsea manager will cost the owners around £20m.

The previous understanding was that there was a release clause worth £10m in Potter’s contract with Brighton and Hove Albion that would need to be paid to hire him. However, that is just the manager’s cost.

The former Swansea boss will also look to bring his staff to Stamford Bridge, the cost of which will add up and the whole package to hire the new coaching staff will cost the amount mentioned above.

It is clever from Brighton as they would receive a good amount of money in compensation for letting their manager go, as long as they hire someone who maintains the newfound standards at the club. They can use that money to lure another top manager in or to buy players in the future.

For Chelsea, it seems as if the owners are adamant that Potter is their man to take the team forward. So, they wouldn’t shirk away from spending the required amount to prize him away from the south coast. It isn’t a cheap investment but it could bear fruit.

The hope would be that the Englishman gets the time to implement his ideas to achieve long-term success. The owners promised that to him during the verbal agreement. Whether they will stick to the promise even when a dip in form comes, remains to be seen.

Although Potter is a fantastic manager who has built his reputation very well in the Premier League, the experience of handling big egos and higher expectations isn’t there. At Brighton, he got the time to implement his system without any pressure of winning or challenging for trophies.

At Chelsea, the idea has always been to win games and trophies, whichever way it comes. If the Englishman can manage this, he can be something special for the Blues.

More Chelsea News:

If he does join officially, he would come in at a time when Chelsea fans don’t know what to expect. Following a manager who won the Champions League trophy just last year won’t be the easiest job in the world for anyone.
