Rio Ferdinand calls out underperforming Chelsea star Eduardo Mendy to step up

Speaking in an interview as quoted by @Blue_Footy, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has asked underperforming Chelsea shot-stopper, Eduardo Mendy, to step his game up and return to the kind of levels he showed last season.

One of Chelsea’s best players for the last couple of seasons, Mendy has not started this season off on the best of notes. He has made quite a few glaring errors that have directly led to the Blues conceding goals this season and the Senegalese needs to step up.

At his best, Mendy is an unbelievable shot-stopper. He can pull off the ridiculous on a consistent basis and almost stood like a wall in Chelsea’s goal last season. Some of the saves that he made almost seemed unbelievable to watch.

Mendy joined Chelsea from Stade Rennais in 2020 at a time when the Blues were having a bit of an issue with the goalkeeping position. Record signing Kepa Arrizzabalaga was not having the best of times and the Blues needed an upgrade in the department.

Whilst he definitely has solved most of the issues that the Blues had in the position, at least for majority of the last two campaigns, the 30-year-old has not yet shown up this season. Thomas Tuchel will be wanting his preferred shot-stopper to get back to his very best.

Rio Ferdinand has called out the talent goalkeeper to step his game up and show the kind of quality that he showed on a regular basis last season

“Against Leeds, he was at fault for the first goal. This one as well. There’s been other occasions where he’s made mistakes and hasn’t been punished. They need to iron that out quick because he was brilliant last season, he was phenomenal.”

The Senegalese shot-stopper will be hoping to rediscover his form very soon. Although Chelsea don’t have a wealth of experience, they still do have Kepa waiting on the bench to take his chance. The Spaniard will be motivated to show his abilities and Mendy will have to be wary of his position.

More Chelsea News:

Despite losing a number of important players during the transfer window, the Blues have done considerable business in reinforcing their defence. They have the squad to compete in all competitions and they will want their goalkeeper back to his best soon.
