Chelsea duo of Reece James and Mason Mount are said to be in talks with the club over new long-term deals. This is according to The Times (subscription required) [h/t Daily Mail].
The report adds that James is currently in advanced negotiations for a new deal with an announcement to follow in the coming days. The Blues are also keen on tying down Mount after the player collected his second Chelsea Player of the Season award last season.
Both the players are two of the lowest-paid players currently in the squad. This does not make much sense, as both are regular players under Thomas Tuchel.
James is one of the best players in the squad. A right-back also capable of playing as a centre-back, the 22-year-old has always stepped up when his side required him to. His phenomenal performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League last season, had him linked with a move to the Madrid club this summer.
The 22-year-old signed a contract extension in 2020 but is now set to be offered new and better terms. As for Mount, the midfielder has gone from strength to strength every season. Ever since making his debut for both club and country, the 23-year-old has established himself in both teams.
Mount last signed a deal in 2019 and will also be offered better and new terms soon. James has had a good start to the season, scoring one and assisting another in four appearances. Mount, meanwhile has struggled having no goal contribution in five games this season.
It is not surprising that the Blues have decided to give these duo a new contract. Both are a key part of Tuchel’s squad and have always given their all on the pitch. Just in their starting twenties, the duo could be the future of the club, with either one of them likely to lead the team.
Both Cobham graduates are somewhat a type of cult heroes at the west London club. Fans love them and the news of them being offered new contracts will come as music to their ears. Hopefully, they spend their career at Stamford Bridge.
