According to the Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News), Chelsea and their Premier League rivals Manchester United are lining up a move to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers recruitment chief Matt Hobbs.
It is claimed that both clubs are looking to revamp their recruitment with fresh blood and new ideas, with Hobbs being one of the leading candidates to do so.
Hobbs is currently the head of scouting and recruitment at Wolves. He has worked with the West Midlands club for a number of years now, in different roles.
Chelsea have appointed Kyle Macauley from Brighton and Hove Albion to support the new manager Graham Potter with regards to scouting players and working with the sporting director, the appointment of whom is expected before the World Cup.
During the summer transfer window, former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was one of the members involved in the decision-making of recruiting players. Owners were heavily involved since the club had no sporting director.
So, it makes sense that they are looking to hire a recruitment chief, along with the expected appointment of a new sporting director this year. It would help the new manager Potter to focus on working with the team, knowing that knowledgeable people are working hard to get the players that suit his system.
Having a settled and experienced backroom staff in the scouting, recruitment and dealing with agents department aids with a smooth running of the club in the long run. It also pushes the owners to take a step back and only be a helping hand in these operations, rather than taking football decisions, for which they are not knowledgeable enough.
Chelsea’s on-field results have not been good so far this season. They would expect that to get better soon under the new manager.
