Chelsea are not done in the transfer market as of yet. Thomas Tuchel is looking to sign a centre-back with Wesley Fofana appearing to be the main target. But the Blues could do with an attacker, especially a number nine who can play anywhere along the frontline.
According to The Times (subscription required) [h/t football.london], Chelsea have reignited their interest in AC Milan forward Rafael Leao. Last month, the 23-year-old had emerged as a potential option for the west London club, but such interests cooled down.
Now, the Blues look to have changed their stance. They are currently working on a deal to sign the Portuguese international, with negotiations already underway since last weekend. One or more Chelsea players could be included in a cash plus player swap deal.
Leao moved to Serie A in 2019 from the French side LOSC Lille. Since then, the 23-year-old has established himself in the Milan team. Primarily deployed as a left-winger, the Portuguese is capable of playing as a centre-forward as and when required.
He was crucial to the Rossoneri’s journey to the league title last season. The forward scored 11 goals and assisted 10 times in 34 league appearances for Milan. His fine form earned him the MVP Best Player award from the Serie A.
Tuchel’s side were completely outplayed by Leeds United last weekend. A 3-0 trashing became bad to worse when Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off. It was clear that the Blues could do with a proper striker in their line-up. Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling are not so capable of being deployed as number nines for every game.
Armando Broja is still comparatively inexperienced to start every game for a club like Chelsea. Leao has all the answers that Tuchel could seek in a forward. The player is also said to be keen on a move to the Premier League and this should be the additional fuel needed for the Blues to go after him.
It remains to be seen what deal can be negotiated with the club and player. The 23-year-old’s current contract expires in 2024 and fans will hope that he does not sign any extension. A tall and experienced player, he could be the target man that Chelsea have been missing in the opposition box.
