Transfer News: Timo Werner could return to RB Leipzig from Chelsea

Timo Werner moved to Chelsea in 2020 following a remarkable goal-scoring season in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig. But since then, the German international has struggled in front of goal and looks a shadow of his former self.

The striker has failed to live up to the £53 million fee paid by the Blues to secure his services. And now after two long years at the Bridge, the Champions League winner could be on his back home.

According to Bild (h/t The Sun), the striker is willing to accept a huge pay cut in order to secure a loan move back to RB Leipzig. This also comes after Thomas Tuchel slammed the 26-year-old for his “would be happy everywhere” comments earlier this month.

Timo Werner could return back to RB Leipzig this summer.

The news might not come as a surprise to several Chelsea fans. The German has struggled to get on the scoresheet on a consistent basis. And for the past few months, he has even struggled for game time.

Werner has scored 23 goals for Chelsea in two years in all competitions. To put it in perspective, he scored 28 goals alone in the Bundesliga during the 2019/20 campaign. He started only 15 Premier League games last season, despite the struggles of Romelu Lukaku.

Should he depart, it would leave Michy Batshuayi and Armando Broja as our lone senior striking options for the 2022/23 season. The former is not preferred and could leave this summer, while the latter is far from the finished product.

Armando Broja has a big season ahead of him.

Tall and technical on the ball, Broja could be a perfect replacement for Werner. The 20-year-old is desperate for game-time and Tuchel could provide him with such. Apart from this, the new signing, Raheem Sterling, can also play as number nine. He did so in the last game against Udinese and scored a goal.

A loan move would be beneficial for all parties. Maybe Werner will regain his old form while Tuchel can assess his options back at west London. A popular figure among the Chelsea fans, the German will be missed should he depart.
