Transfer News: Barcelona await final price tag after agreeing on personal terms with Marcos Alonso

Early days of the Ted Boehly era at Chelsea indicate an impending transition at SW6, with several old names at the club poised for an exit this summer. One such name is Marcos Alonso, who has apparently agreed on personal terms with Barcelona.

The only thing standing in the way between Alonso and him donning Blaugrana colours is a transfer fee, since the Spaniard has one year left on his current deal. Barcelona are waiting to find out what the final number on the price tag would be, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano

The Madrid-born left-back signed for Chelsea in 2017, joining Antonio Conte’s revolution at Stamford Bridge and in his very first season, played a pivotal role in helping the club win the Premier League.

Since then, Alonso has won it all at Chelsea- the FA Cup in 2018, the Europa League in 2019, the Champions League and Super Cup in 2021 and the Club World Cup in 2022. Quite literally, he has won every trophy there is to win as a Blue. That is probably why Alonso feels prepared for a new challenge.

Marcus Alonso is a modern-day Chelsea great

Alonso has often come under a lot of criticism for the defensive aspect of his game but in the modern game where the attacking prowess of left-backs and wing-backs are so emphasised, the Spaniard has thoroughly excelled in that department.

Since his arrival in 2016, Alonso has been an attacking menace down the left flank, almost playing as a winger when the Blues have been in the final third of the pitch. He has made 212 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 29 goals and providing 23 assists

Marcos Alonso has won it all at Chelsea.

If Barcelona do secure his signature, they can have the confidence of signing a defender who can play a valuable role in the team’s buildup and attacking play.

Danish centre-back Andreas Christensen is also closing in on a move to the Camp Nou, after not agreeing to a new deal while Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta could also join the Catalan club with a two-year offer on the table. However, just like Alonso, he has one year left on his deal.

Chelsea are likely to sign a defender who can serve as deputy to first-choice Ben Chilwell, who is en route to regaining full fitness following an anterior cruciate ligament injury last December which ruled him out for the season.

More Chelsea news:

Euro 2020-winning left-back Emerson Palmieri is set to return to the club next season and fight for a place, after returning from a loan spell at Olympique Lyonnais. But if he is satisfied with being Chilwell’s backup is something only time will tell.
