Thomas Tuchel sheds light on Chelsea transfer plans for the upcoming summer

According to football.london, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has opened up on the club’s plans for the upcoming 2022 summer transfer window.

The Blues went into the 2021/22 campaign with a lot of hope and even won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. That however proved to be the high watermark as a loss of form and injuries saw us fall away on other fronts.

The Carabao Cup and FA Cup final losses to Liverpool showcased the work that needs to be done to add further bite to our squad. Tuchel confirms that he already has an idea of the players that need to be brought in this summer.

Thomas Tuchel sheds light on Chelsea transfer plans for the upcoming summer.

While Tuchel appears to have an idea, it remains to be seen if it is along the same line of thought as the club’s new owners. The Todd Boehly group looks set to take over as the new stewards of Stamford Bridge and it remains to be seen if they will back Tuchel to the hilt.

“We have an idea, but unfortunately, the guys don’t know that we have an idea, nor do the clubs. We have ideas, but we also need to find out what the ideas of the new owners are. This is also a key point, and from there, we go.”

With just one more game to go this season, plans need to take shape quickly at Stamford Bridge. However, the due diligence needed to get deals over the line has been delayed thanks to the ensuing ownership saga. Whether that will prove costly remains to be seen.

“Normally, at this time of the season, you are contacting players, you are out, you get a feeling, a read, you have discussions, you have dialogue, you have feedback, you know who is committed, you find your targets, you sign your players, and you go from there to the next step. Because we didn’t have this step, this is where we are.”

While Chelsea might finish third in the Premier League this season, we cannot take it for granted. The likes of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and potentially even Newcastle United should present more of a threat next season.

Given that we are facing a defensive exodus of sorts, Chelsea cannot afford to stay still. The sooner we are able to move in the transfer market, the quicker we can land our priority targets. Hopefully, things will pick up swiftly once the ownership question is answered.

The summer transfer window affords us a golden opportunity to revamp a squad that is both ageing and nearing the end of its cycle. Hopefully, Tuchel and the new owners will be on the same wavelength as far as rebuilding plans are concerned.

Manchester City and Liverpool only seem to build on their strengths and if Chelsea want to challenge their duopoly, the transfer market is one place where they can turn for help.
