As we near the end of the 2021/22 season, now is the time to reflect on the past year to establish who has been Chelsea’s Player of the Season. There have been some standout performers across the team, but here are three players who have to be on the shortlist for all the end of season awards.

Antonio Rudiger

Defender Antonio Rudiger has been exceptional so far in the 2021/22 campaign. He has led the defence in Thomas Tuchel’s team, and it can be argued this has been his best season in a Chelsea shirt since he first moved to the club in 2017 from Roma.

As it stands, Chelsea look set to secure Champions League football again next season as they are currently priced at odds of 1/40 in the outright markets, for those who , for a top-four finish. They will be hoping they are able to persuade the German defender to remain at the club and feature in the European competition for them in the 2022/23 campaign.

It is not just Rudiger’s rock-solid performances at the back that have helped the Blues this season; he’s also often popped up with a goal at a vital moment of a game. In addition, so far, he has scored four times in the campaign, which is his highest ever tally for the Blues.

Mason Mount

There is a good chance Mason Mount will finish the season as Chelsea’s top goalscorer and their player with the most assists. The England international has consistently been one of the team’s best attackers over the last three years, and somebody that both Frank Lampard and Tuchel have been unable to leave out of the team.

Mount has the potential to be a future Chelsea captain once Cesar Azpilicueta leaves the club. He continues to develop on the pitch and his strong, reliable performances this season reflect that. The Englishman has upped his goal return, but at the same time, he continues to assist his teammates.

The former Chelsea Academy player will be vital in the season’s final stages if Chelsea are to finish the campaign with some silverware. He is also likely to play a big part for the England national at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Edouard Mendy

It has been some 12 months for Chelsea’s keeper Edouard Mendy. First, he was the hero in Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations success, where they defeated Egypt on penalties in the final of the competition to win the tournament for the first time.

Secondly, Mendy has also been successful in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup since last May. Impressively, he is becoming very used to lifting major trophies for club and country.

The Senegalese shot-stopper has already recorded 11 clean sheets this season for Chelsea in the Premier League. He has firmly established himself as the Blues’ number one and his performances over the last couple of years have been consistently very high.

All three of the above players would be deserved winners of the Chelsea Player of the Season award. They also have a great chance of finishing in the Premier League Team of the Season.
