Manchester City make AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni a transfer priority target amidst Chelsea interest

According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Manchester City have made AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni their priority target this summer amidst interest from Chelsea for a potential move. He has earned rave reviews for his performances over the past year or so, having become a regular at the club and country level.

That has seen the Blues already express their intentions to sign Tchouameni ahead of the summer transfer window. However, they will now face added competition after Man City have entered the race. Their stance was influenced after Fernandinho recently revealed that he could leave the Etihad at the end of this season.

The Citizens have made Tchouameni their “number one target”, which has prompted them to prepare plans to “beat their rivals to a deal”. Liverpool and Real Madrid are also in pursuit right now as they look to secure his services this summer. However, this new update would be a blow to all parties who have already registered their interests.

Can Chelsea win this race?

Pep Guardiola’s side posing new competition for the Frenchman further complicates the transfer race for us in the coming months. With Fernandinho potentially leaving them after this term, they require a holding midfielder even though Rodri is in their ranks.

That could explain why they have quickly identified Tchouameni as a transfer target. However, we cannot allow them to get their hands on the defensive midfielder in any case. After all, we require a holding midfielder in our squad if the recent setbacks are anything to go by. Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have struggled with form in the past few weeks, which could be a sign of decline.

Signing Tchouameni would not only help with our needs but also prevent our direct rivals like the Manchester club and the Reds from strengthening their squad. What’s more, with him only having a contract until 2024, Monaco are also willing to part ways with him for an appropriate price.

Aurelien Tchouameni has a contract until 2024.

We would eventually need to bring in a world-class player to replace the ageing Jorginho and Kante. However, looking at their recent problems, we may need to speed up the process after all. Tchouameni has also shown that he can play at the top level as he has become a key player for the France national team.

However, if we are to make any move from our side, the current ownership uncertainty needs to be solved at the earliest. After all, that has put us in a bit of limbo as we are not allowed to engage in transfer dealings because of the UK Government’s sanctions.

Let’s hope that the new owners would be willing to invest in the squad if there are plans to challenge for titles against Man City and Jurgen Klopp’s side. Raising the squad’s quality would help bridge the gap with them, and Tchouameni can be one of the steps to reaching the PL duo.
