Chelsea managed to hold their own and as they held out for a 2-0 victory against LOSC Lille in their latest UEFA Champions League fixture. The Blues were thrust into the lead by an early header by Kai Havertz who played as the upfront in the absence of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.
The French club managed to get back into the game and keep position well but hardly managed to trouble Edouard Mendy in goal on the night. Renato Sanchez proved to be a nuisance for us throughout the game as he picked up balls in great spaces and was the focal point on most attacking plays in the match.
Whilst Les Dogues pressed well and maintained high intensity, they never really looked like getting on the scoreboard. N’Golo Kante made a darting run on a counter-attack to put Christian Pulsisic in an amazing position. The USA international made no mistake as Chelsea doubled their lead in the 63rd minute via a composed finish by him.
Hakim Ziyech had to be substituted in the second half of the game. The Moroccan professional footballer limped off the field and that could be a cause for worry but it could still be too early to tell. Hopefully, there isn’t much damage and the player will be able to return to the starting setup soon.
With a 2-0 lead in the first leg, Chelsea have the assurance of a comfortable cushion in the return fixture against Lille. The Blues would be hoping to carry the same kind of form in the business end of the season when the matches start piling up and the fatigue starts to finally set in.
The West London club are carrying some great momentum with them in the final of the EFL Cup against Liverpool on Sunday. The club has already lifted the FIFA Club World Cup this month and another piece of silverware could be the icing on the cake which would be made even sweeter taking into consideration the bitter rivalry with the Reds.
