Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel confirms Mason Mount injury blow following Club World Cup win

According to the Sun, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Mason Mount has sustained an ankle injury following the Club World Cup triumph against Palmeiras.

Mason Mount has developed into a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge after a series of stunning performances in recent years. A Cobham academy graduate, the Englishman made it through the ranks at the club and is today a first-team star. The 23-year-old Englishman is living the dream currently.

After Mount played an influencing role in last season’s Champions League triumph, it was clear that he would be presented with significant responsibilities in this campaign. But, the pressure was even higher on the academy star due to the injury of first-choice forwards like Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner. However, he excelled in his role this term, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Tuchel picked Mount to put in another essential performance in the Club World Cup final on Saturday. However, after only 31 minutes on the clock, the Englishman was substituted after suffering an ankle injury. In his post-match press conference, our German manager revealed the extent of the injury and suggested how Mount got injured in the first place.

“Mason told me the ankle was still painful and didn’t feel good. An opponent fell on his ankle, and he hurt his ligaments badly.”

Even though he didn’t reveal the extent of the injury, Tuchel’s remarks of the ‘painful’ injury suggest that our team is set to face another blow in the midfield. Mount was also seen using crutches and had heavy strapping on his right ankle when he came out to celebrate with the team after extra time.

How badly is this injury going to affect us?

Mount has been phenomenal in this campaign and any potential absence is sure to be a major blow for the Blues. Our German manager has used him in attacking midfield and even as a striker due to his incredible skillset up on the pitch.

While it is too soon to make a judgement on the injury’s severity, it was heartening to see Mount move on his own albeit in crutches. He will hopefully return to action sooner rather than later as we look to end the season strong. With our strikers failing to consistently perform, the onus will be on Mount and co to compensate for goals from midfield.

Mount has become an essential part of our squad, and we will certainly feel his absence in the coming weeks. But the good news is Lukaku has regained his form, and our favourable midfield trio – N’Golo Kanté, Jorginho and Mateo Kovačić have also returned from injury. Whether he will return in time to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final later this month remains to be seen.
