Steven Gerrard heaps praise for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount

According to Football.London, Aston Villa manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard thinks Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is currently one of England’s best players.

The Englishman was handed his Chelsea debut under former manager Frank Lampard. Since then, the 22-year-old has capitalized on every opportunity that came in his way and is today an established first-team starter. Currently, he is one of the key players under Thomas Tuchel and his absence is noticeable.

Furthermore, this season, the English international is the highest scorer for the Blues, which shows incredible growth in such a short span. Villa manager Steven Gerrard shares the belief and has suggested that Mount could be the biggest threat to his team when they play against Chelsea on Sunday.

“I’ve watched his progress – of course I have. He’s a big talent for the country. I’m a massive fan of Mason. I just hope he doesn’t have such a strong performance at the weekend.”

Mount earned a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad in 2019 after a series of impressive performances with Chelsea. The Blues academy graduate was one of the key players of the Three Lions squad that reached the final of EURO 2020. Gerrard believes the youngster could have long term success with the national team.

“He’s already certainly one of the best players in the country. I have no doubts that he will be in the next squads for a lot of tournaments.”

Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice forwards have missed many games this season, and the German manager has been obliged to play Mount in forwarding positions. Even though the 22-year-old has done incredibly well, only his contribution wouldn’t be enough for Blues’ title dream.

Chelsea’s record signing Romelu Lukaku has failed to put his name on top goalscoring charts. Thus, the manager must find a solution that guarantees him regular goals and assists.

Mount’s growth, no doubt, is a good sign for the future. But over dependability on the English youngster could hurt the Blues’ long term goals. For now, it is imperative that he does not outfrow the club.
