According to transfer news on El Nacional (h/t The Sun), Chelsea are looking to seal a deal for AC Milan ace Theo Hernandez in January as cover to the injury riddled Ben Chilwell.
The Blues have suffered quite a rough patch in the last three weeks. Since defeating Juventus 4-0, the men in blue have only managed two victories in six games and have conceded 11 goals in that period.
It is not a coincidence that we started doing so after Ben Chilwell picked up an injury. The Englishman has been vital to the way we defend and attack. Marcos Alonso has suffered deputising in that role, as have Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Saul Niguez.
Thus, the West London club are looking to bring in Theo Hernandez in January. The Frenchman has impressed in the last two seasons at the San Siro, scoring 16 goals and providing 18 assists in 100 appearances. Unfortunately, due to these performances, Chelsea are not the only club interested in signing him.
Paris Saint-Germain are also weighing up a move for him and are prepared to offer more than £34million to the Italian club. This slightly complicates matters, especially since the player also has a contract until 2024 with the Serie A club.
The Chelsea chief has done commendable business in the last half a decade by luring some of the best talents in the world to Stamford Bridge. She needs to continue doing so in the upcoming January transfer window, as we are genuinely starting to suffer without Chilwell.
Hernandez could just about be the perfect option, given his attention to detail in both phases of the game. Moreover, he is only 24 and can continue to provide ample competition to his English teammate for a long time to come.
Alonso looks off the paces, and given that he shall turn 31 soon, it might be time to offload him. In fact, transfer expert Ian McGarry also recently revealed on the Transfer Window Podcast, as quoted by the Express, that Spaniard has asked his agent to secure an exit for him. The full-back only has 18 months left on his deal, and the Blues could secure a transfer fee for him.
The AC Milan ace could directly replace him in the squad. However, there is the concern that he could hamper Chilwell’s confidence, with both vying for consistent game-time. But that is a good problem to have. And if a deal can be pursued in January, Granovskaia needs to seal a move as soon as possible.
