Player News: Veteran defender Thiago Silva to renew Chelsea contract

According to UOL (h/t ESPN), Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is expected to sign a contract extension soon that will extend his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2023. He has enjoyed a great stint with the Blues following his move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Silva joined the club on a free transfer in the summer transfer window of 2020. The former AC Milan defender had to adapt to a new league but since doing so, he has been a commanding presence in the Chelsea backline.

The Brazilian has featured in 48 matches and has scored three goals while assisting his teammates once. His contributions have helped the team win the Champions League last season and top the Premier League this term.

Marina Granovskaia has decided to solve the uncertainty surrounding the defender’s future as a new deal is ‘imminent’. It would see him extend his stay for an additional year, and that could be a smart decision based on the circumstances.

While the 37-year-old is in the twilight of his playing career, he still provides consistent performances. His quality also ensures that the team has great depth as they look to compete in multiple competitions.

The centre-back should thus be slowly phased away from the starting line-up once we can integrate youngsters like Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr into the team. His extension would also help the English club shift their focus onto the other centre-backs who see their contracts expire at the end of the season.

The Brazil international was recently involved in his side 4-0 win against Juventus, which sees them top their group. He provided a solid performance yet again and has shown no signs of any decline. Should the extension be announced officially, the fans would accept it wholeheartedly and be less concerned about the defensive situation.
