Speaking to Cope (h/t Football.London), Sevilla president Jose Castro has issued an update on the situation of Jules Kounde amidst interest from Chelsea. The Blues were involved in a failed transfer move with the Rojiblancos over the services of the defender earlier this summer.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were interested in Kounde during the summer transfer window but were not able to reach an agreement with his club over the valuation. He has three years left on his current contract, meaning the Spanish club hold all the cards.
There is a release clause in the centre-back’s contract worth £68million, which the English club were hesitant to activate in August. The Sevilla chief has stated that they are open to selling him in January should an “appropriate” offer be made.
“Jules Kounde deal? We’re not going to change our position. If the proposal we receive is out of market, we will sell our players to sign new ones.”
The Premier League leaders may have to activate the clause after all due to the rigid stance from the Sevilla president. However, a fee around that region could also be agreed upon, depending on how the negotiations take place in the winter.
Manchester United are also said to be interested in getting the Frenchman’s services with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to solidify his backline. The competition may put Chelsea in a tough spot, and they might have to depend on the clause in the contract.
There is no concrete information now whether Chelsea would renew their interest in the January transfer window. What we know is that they were highly interested ahead of this season, and it is unlikely that the preference would have faded given Kounde’s good run of form.
