Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta and left-back Marcos Alonso were two Spanish players who took part in last night’s UEFA Nations League final against France.
While La Roja took the lead, world champions France came back to turn the tie on its head. Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe was the hero for Les Blues on the night.
Questions have however been raised regarding the 22-year-old’s strike. There was a hint of offside in the buildup that was eventually awarded in favour of France. It is fair to say that the Spanish have not taken it kindly.
According to Sky Sports, Azpilicueta has now slammed the referee for not taking a second look himself. The fact that Taylor does not go to the monitor himself is rather baffling.
“I don’t know why the Referee doesn’t got to the monitor and make the decision. The monitor is there to use it.”
The Chelsea star calls out Taylor stating he is on the field to make decisions. However, rather than him, it is VAR that made the decisive call.
“The Referee is there to makes the decisions. I am disappointed that Mr Anthony Taylor isn’t the one who makes the decision, it is VAR that makes the decision.”
Azpilicueta believes Spain were the better team on the night. The match was largely evenly balanced with the Iverians enjoying more of the ball. Unfortunately, it is a contentious call that went on to deny Azpilicvueta international glory.
“We were the better team the score says different.”
With the match now done, the focus will shift to Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Brentford. Azpilicueta will hopefully go on to erase last night\s memory by leading us to glory.
