According to Sport1 (h/t Express), Antonio Rudiger could take some time to decide on a new Chelsea contract. While he is said to be in talks with the club over a new deal, he is claimed to be taking time to decide on his future and possibly explore all options.
Antonio Rudiger has always been a quality defender at the club. He did his job quietly and got on with it. However, he lost his place under Frank Lampard last season, only to be brought back into the fold by Thomas Tuchel. Since then, Rudiger has repaid the trust with stellar performances for the club.
His robust style of defending was a vital part of Chelsea winning the Champions League last season. However, Chelsea are in a huge spot with the defender’s contract. The German’s current deal ends in less than a year, meaning that foreign clubs can speak to him over a free transfer from January itself.
The Blues are trying their best to get him to sign a new deal. It has been claimed that the player’s brother is negotiating a new deal with transfer supremo Marina Granovskaia. However, Rudiger wants to bide his time in this matter and keep his options open. Chelsea are likely to have to shell out a lot more than the £100,000 per week Rudiger currently pockets.
Rudiger does deserve a new deal but Chelsea cannot force him to do that. He is certainly one of the best and most experienced defenders on the side and Tuchel would want to keep him. However, the Blues will now have to wait and see what exactly Rudiger decides on.
