According to transfer news from Mirror, Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Ben White. The Brighton defender is a man in demand with the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City also after him. However, reputed journalist Duncan Castles claimed that Chelsea have made contact with the player and could provide competition to the aforementioned sides.
Perhaps defence isn’t an area that Chelsea would need immediate reinforcements in. However, a closer look at their defenders will reveal some problems. Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta are not getting younger. The duo of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen will see their contract run out within a year.
Hence, it’s rather unsurprising that Chelsea have put themselves in the race for Ben White. The Brighton defender has come leaps and bounds over the last few seasons. He helped Leeds gain promotion to the Premier League in 2020 after which he had a solid year at Brighton. His performances were enough to hand him a spot in the England side for the Euros.
Interest in White remains high. Arsenal are thought to be the leading side in this chase. Everton and Man City have also shown interest. Now, Duncan Castles has spoken of how Chelsea have entered the race for White.
“I now understand that Chelsea have notified the player of their interest in signing him. I think that’s significant competition for Arsenal. Chelsea can offer Champions League football, can offer a club based in London in the same way that Arsenal can, but one that should be immediately competitive for the Premier League title.”
At just 23, White is someone who has already made his mark on the Premier League. Chelsea pursuing the defender is a logical move on their part. He can be a long term addition to the side. Plus, Chelsea do hold some edge over sides such as Arsenal with the prospect of Champions League football.
