According to transfer news from the Express & Star, Chelsea midfielder Trevoh Chalobah is closing in on a switch to EFL Championship club West Bromwich Albion.
Chalobah is a product of the Chelsea youth academy and has been on the club’s books way back since 2007 when he was an eight-year-old. Having risen through the ranks at Cobham, the 22-year-old midfielder has featured in plenty for the Blues’ Under-18 and the Under-23 sides, but has never made a first-team appearance.
Indeed, Chalobah has been farmed out on loan for the past three seasons in row, having spent the 2018/19 term with Ipswich Town before signing for Huddersfield Town for 2019/20. The defensive midfielder was loaned out to French club FC Lorient for the 2020/21 campaign where he impressed quite a fair bit, scoring and assisting two goals each in 30 games.
Now back at Chelsea after his loan spell has ran out, Chalobah has been made available for a transfer by manager Thomas Tuchel. While Lorient are said to be interested in a permanent deal for the 22-year-old, he is believed to be keen on staying in England, with West Brom now in the lead for his transfer. (h/t Express & Star)
The Baggies, who were relegated to the Championship from the Premier League this past season, have been in negotiations with Chelsea over a move for Chalobah over the past week. And it is understood that the talks have progressed quite well.
Chalobah still has two years left on his contract with Chelsea. But the report claims that the Blues are unlikely to command any transfer fee for the 22-year-old, with West Brom set to sign him for free. A deal is expected to be completed in the next week.
