According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t football.london), talks regarding a potential move for Chelsea transfer target, Saul Niguez, to Barcelona have broken down.
And this comes as a big boost for Thomas Tuchel, who is looking to strengthen his Chelsea side ahead of the new season. Saul is in demand and Atletico Madrid are not opposed to letting the 26-year-old leave. (h/t football.london)
Chelsea have a strong midfield already. Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic all vie for starts under Thomas Tuchel for the two spots in central midfield.
But Saul would add a bucketload of quality and experience to the Chelsea side considering his achievements at Atletico. He has played 337 times for Los Colchoneros’ senior side and won the La Liga title last year.
As per a report by Spanish outlet AS (h/t Daily Star) and covered by ASBTF earlier this month, Saul is also wanted by Manchester United and Liverpool.
That report (h/t Daily Star) also mentions that his reduced role in Atletico’s title-winning season has left him wanting a move away from Wanda Metropolitano. This comes as a good opportunity for the Blues to add an experienced midfielder into their ranks.
Saul is also just 26, which means he is still in the prime years of his career. His versatility of playing on the flanks, as well as anywhere in central midfield, would also come as a bonus for Chelsea’s German manager.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea pounce on Barcelona’s supposed failure to land the Spanish midfielder. But if they do, this would be a wise acquisition by the chiefs at Stamford Bridge.
