According to the Independent, Chelsea and Scotland starlet, Billy Gilmour will be missing the Croatia game after testing positive for COVID. The midfielder will now have to isolate for a minimum of 10 days before he can return to action, pending a negative COVID test.
After not being used in the loss against the Czech Republic in the opening game, there was a general consensus that Scotland boss Steve Clarke had to play him against England. That’s exactly what happened as Gilmour provided a star of the match performance keeping the entire England midfield at bay.
However, as Scotland go into their final group game against a robust Croatia side, they have received a huge blow. Billy Gilmour has tested positive for COVID and must now isolate for 10 days. That means he will not be able to play Scotland’s must-win game.
The Scottish FA confirmed the same via an announcement.
“The Scottish FA can confirm that a member of the Scotland National Team playing squad, Billy Gilmour, has tested positive for Covid-19. Having liaised with Public Health England since the positive test was recorded, Billy will now self-isolate for 10 days and therefore miss tomorrow’s Uefa Euro 2020 Group D match against Croatia at Hampden.”
Given the form he was in, it was imperative that he play a vital role against Croatia. Both sides are tied on 1 point and a win could push them to the second place. Gilmour’s absence is likely to be felt badly. However, Scotland will now need to rally and give it all to get that elusive win.
