According to transfer news from Hampshire Live, Chelsea are set to battle Southampton for the signing of Sean Roughan. The 17-year-old from Lincoln City has been in fine fettle over the last season, which has attracted the above-mentioned Premier League sides’ attention.
Recently, Roughan was seen for trials at Southampton’s training ground in Staplewood. That has alerted academy coaches at Stamford Bridge, who have also informed Lincoln City about wanting to give the left-back a trial at London for a week.
Roughan’s form for the Imps has been rewarded with a call-up to the national team. He has been named in the 26-man squad for the Republic of Ireland U-21’s. They will play a series of friendlies against Switzerland, Austria and Denmark in Spain.
Lincoln City are now waiting for either Chelsea or Southampton to bid for the talented left-back. Over the last season, he made 11 appearances for the Imps while also featuring twice for Southampton’s U-18 side on trial.
Southampton are looking to add a new left-back to their side, with Ryan Bertrand leaving the club. Jake Vokins has not impressed either. They are pretty much heading into the new season without a recognised left-back and hence, their interest in securing Roughan is understandable.
Chelsea have always been on the lookout for talented players for their academy. Roughan represents a similar prospect. However, Chelsea will need to work on a deal soon as there is also interest from Southampton.
