Paul Merson tells Chelsea to acquire an experienced defender and striker next season

Paul Merson has advised Cheslea in which position they need to put their money in the summer to reach the competitive level of Manchester City and Arsenal next season. The Blues will once again embark on another long summer spending spree and bring in more players to bolster some positions.

Mauricio Pochettino has overseen this young squad this campaign and done decent work, taking them to seventh in the Premier League, just two points shy of Newcastle United in the table. But with just three matches to go, the Argentine will hope his side finishes on top.

However, this campaign hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the Argentine, who faced calls of sacking when the Blues embarked on losing streaks in the middle of the season. but with the current form, the pressure seems to have dwindled.

Chelsea will now look forward to their next season and will hope they will challenge for all trophies. And former Chelsea star Merson has suggested where the Blues should make signings, (h/t Metro), speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

They probably need an experienced centre-half to take Silva’s place, and they could do with another centre-forward too. They want to get into the Champions League next year, surely. So they’ve got to start bridging the gap between Arsenal and Manchester City.’’

Merson is spot on what Chelsea needs next season to reach the competitive level of Manchester City and Arsenal. This summer, we have to be very wise with our spending and just don’t sign in players recklessly with big fees and overflow the squad. It’s time that our board also emphasize the acquisition of experienced players.

It’s frustrating to manage a young squad because they will also get exposed in such an intense league and their lack of performance will see the blame pointed at the manager. We need to credit Pochettino for what he has done in his first Chelsea season.

if the board wants to take some burden off his work, they should make rational decisions in the summer window. If he gets a reliable centre-forward who can always guarantee goals, then we will be up against City and Gunners next season.
