Chelsea announce that fans will be present at board meetings going forward

According to news from BBC Sport, Chelsea have announced a reform that there will be Supporter Advisors on the board from next season. This comes after the fallout from the European Super League protests from the fans.

On 18th April, 12 elite European clubs passed the proposal of a new ‘European Super League’. The new tournament was supposed to be a closed affair with its 12 founding members and a few other clubs. There were no other teams other than the 20 current participants and that irked the footballing community.

Within 48 hours, all the Premier League clubs withdrew one by one. The ESL plan collapsed spectacularly before even becoming a reality.

As the fallout from the saga continues with protests, Chelsea have made a decision that will include supporter representatives in the board meetings. The decision “will allow the club to discuss and seek advice on a broad range of matters”.

The club also provided a statement regarding the appointment of the representatives.

“Criteria for nominations as well as final selection will ensure that the supporter presence is representative of our supporter base generally and is inclusive and diverse. A new selection will be made before the start of each season.”

However, these representatives will not have voting rights or take part in board meetings regarding the players, staff and the academy. Clubs such as Chelsea and Liverpool have taken such measures to include more fans into the club’s workings after the fan backlash and protests.
