According to The Scotsman, Chelsea are one among a host of clubs that are interested in securing the signing of teenage defender Josh Doig from Scottish Premiership club Hibernian FC.
Doig, 19, came through the ranks at Heart of Midlothian FC before making the switch to cross-town rivals Hibs. Following a couple of loan stints away from the club, the left-back has become a regular in the starting XI during the 2020/21 campaign.
So far this term, Doig has featured 35 times across all competitions, scoring one goal and setting up four more. The Hibs ace was named the Scottish Football Writers’ Association’s Young Player of the Year following his successful breakthrough campaign, which has led to interest from down south in England.
Chelsea are said to be one among the teams interested in Doig, along with Arsenal and Leicester City. In addition, newly-promoted Premier League club Watford are also keen on the 19-year-old and have already made an approach to secure the Scotsman’s transfer. (h/t The Scotsman)
Chelsea’s interest in Doig could be attributed to the fact that we could use a decent cover for Ben Chilwell at the first-team level. Marcos Alonso, having shown signs of revival early in Thomas Tuchel’s tenure, has reverted to type whereas Emerson Palmieri looks completely out of favour at the Bridge as things stand.
So, bringing in someone like Doig, who can used as backup while being groomed for a bigger role in the first-team in the future would make sense.
However, Hibernian are under no pressure to sell, having extended his contract not so long ago. The player himself has admitted that he is not looking for a transfer immediately. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea’s interest in Doig does translate to anything meaningful come summer.
