Rafael van der Vaart urges Thomas Tuchel to drop Timo Werner in favour of Hakim Ziyech

According to Daily Star, Rafael van der Vaart has urged Thomas Tuchel to drop Timo Werner in favour of Hakim Ziyech. The former Spurs midfielder labelled Werner as a ‘blind horse’ and felt that Ziyech would be a better option for Tuchel at Chelsea.

It seems like Timo Werner really can’t catch a break. Despite only joining the club this season, he has failed to match his previously high standards. With two goals since November, it does tell you the story.

As Chelsea put their foot in the Champions League semi-finals with a convincing aggregate win, Timo Werner was warming the benches for a second successive game.

Former Premier League midfielder Van der Vaart spoke on the issue and felt that Ziyech would be much more effective in his place.

“If I was Thomas Tuchel I would always pick Hakim Ziyech, simply because he is the best option by far. “He can cut inside and create chances, as can Mason Mount.

That is what Olivier Giroud needs. Timo Werner is super fast, and maybe that is something good to have in an away game when Chelsea are under pressure.

“But all he does is put his head down and run himself to death. Mount is a terrific footballer, and I think he can get even better, but Werner is truly a blind horse. He already showed that’s what he is like when he played in Germany – and he’s doing it again now.”

It might seem harsh on Werner, who is just in his first season at the club but the fact remains that he has not shown much of an improvement even after Tuchel’s arrival.

Ziyech, on the other hand, has received sporadic chances and maybe Tuchel could try to use the advice imparted by Van der Vaart.
