It was 27th April 2014 when Mamadou Sakho played a short pass to Steven Gerrard and the Englishman lost his bearings, resulting in an unfortunate slip against Chelsea. (h/t Daily Star)
Demba Ba pounced on to the ball and raced clear to score and put Chelsea 1-0 ahead. Before this match, Liverpool needed 7 points from their remaining 3 games to mathematically confirm the title.
A draw at Chelsea would have done, but Brendan Rodgers seemingly set Liverpool up for the win. Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea sat deep while the Reds did the hard work on the ball.
It was perhaps a chance like this that the Blues were waiting for all game and once it came, their defence did not look like conceding.
The game ended at 2-0, with ex-Liverpool player, Fernando Torres, sparing further embarrassment for his former club by passing a 1-on-1 chance to Willian in added time, resulting in the Brazilian passing the ball into the net.
Liverpool had not won the league for nearly 24 years back then, and this was their golden chance. What added insult to injury for Gerrard was his speech after they beat Manchester City.
The Reds beat City two weeks before they took on Chelsea that year, and Gerrard was famously heard saying,
“This does not slip now! This does not slip! Listen: we go to Norwich, exactly the same! We go again!” after the full-time whistle.
And of all people to let it slip, it was him. While it was a torturous moment for Liverpool fans all around the world, Chelsea fans recall that as one of their fondest recent memories in the Premier League era.
Today, it completes its 7-year anniversary with there being no shortage of reminders for it on social media. And as you would expect, Chelsea fans pounced on the opportunity to share a laugh at the expense of the current Rangers boss.
