According to news from NBC Sports, Chelsea ace Christian Pulisic wants to play in the 2020 Olympics for The USA. However, there remains a lot of complications regarding the other national tournaments and qualifiers.
With the US team failing to qualify for the 2012 and 2016 editions, Pulisic really wants to participate in the postponed 2020 edition this year. The US have to play a qualifier against Canada or Honduras, and the winner goes to the showpiece event in Tokyo.
However, he acknowledged that it’s not entirely up to him but really wants to play.
“The Olympics is something that is, of course, a massive honor to play in. To represent your country in an Olympics would be amazing. It’s something I’ve thought about and I have wanted to play in.
Obviously, I can’t control exactly what goes on and what is best for me at the time and what’s best for the team at the time, I obviously can’t say. But it is something that I would like to play in.”
The problem is that the US have their Gold Cup prior to the Olympics and Chelsea will have to release eligible players for the same. Even if they are not bound to send players for the Olympics, they have to do so for the Gold Cup.
In the event Pulisic is released by Chelsea, the US will have to decide whether he plays in the Gold Cup or the Olympics. Pulisic has been the flag bearer for the North Americans in football and alongside him, a whole host of young Americans are playing in Europe.
