According to news outlet Metro, Ben Chilwell feels that the competition for places at Chelsea will benefit him when playing for England. The defender will likely compete with Luke Shaw of Manchester United when England start their Euro 2020 campaign.
A big-money arrival from Leicester City in the summer, Chilwell was slotted directly into the side on his arrival. He did start off on a bright note and produced some fine performances for the Blues. He was even afforded a start under Thomas Tuchel in his first game in charge.
However, post that Chilwell lost his place to Marcos Alonso as Tuchel deemed the Spaniard a better fit in his 3-4-2-1 formation as a wing-back. From thereon, Alonso was given a consistent run of games after being frozen out by Lampard.
Nonetheless, Tuchel has also given opportunities to Chilwell at wingback in recent games. The Englishman was of the opinion that the competition for places at Chelsea is similar to that in the England squad.
‘At Chelsea, you’ve got two or three good players in each position. And with England, you should expect the same thing. Going into the Euros, if me and Luke are battling it out and trying to prove who’s having the best club form going into the tournament, that’s only a positive.’
Both the full-backs have been called for England’s WC qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland. They will likely have to play as wing-backs given England have resorted to a back-three formation in recent years.
