According to L’Equipe (h/t The Sun), Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will have to make use of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, whether he wants to or not. It has been claimed that Tuchel has been specifically brought in to get the German duo firing for the Blues, something Frank Lampard could not do.
Tuchel has been made aware of the same as Chelsea transfer chief Marina Granovskaia and the board have outlined a plan for the two new and expensive recruits. Unless Tuchel manages to get the best out of them, it will be hard for him to succeed at Chelsea.
Timo Werner arrived from RB Leipzig as one of the most prolific young strikers in Bundesliga. His goal record was fantastic and it seemed like a good move to bring him to the club to compete against the likes of Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham. However, it has been anything but.
Under Lampard, Werner struggled after an initial flourish. Things might be a bit better under Tuchel who has applied a positional change on him. His displays might have improved but the goals need to start flowing soon.
Kai Havertz was another expensive signing, arriving from Bayern Leverkusen. The attacking midfielder was regarded as one of the best emerging talents to come out from the league in recent times. Problem is, he has fared worse than Werner.
In no position has Havertz looked comfortable. He has been tried out in multiple positions in attack and midfield but none have worked. While he has been injured at the start of Tuchel’s reign, it will be interesting to see how he uses the 21-year-old.
Frank Lampard could not get the best out of those two and the team faltered which led to his sack. Tuchel will need to avoid that and somehow find a way to accommodate both these talents and also make them flourish.
