It is fair to say that Marcos Alonso looked to be done at Chelsea. The Spaniard was frozen out after getting on the wrong side of Frank Lampard at the Hawthorns earlier this season.
With Thomas Tuchel now in charge of the club, a clean slate was on offer. Alonso took full advantage of the opportunity as he capped off his return with a world-class volley.
The full-backs were the heroes on the night as Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta scored to give Tuchel his first win as Blues boss.
A tour de force going forward, Alonso has always excelled as a wing-back. His defensive contribution is, however, debatable and a conversation for another time.
The issue between Lampard and Alonso dragged on for more than what was necessary. The player showcased just what he can offer if he is utilized correctly.
All in all, it was a welcome return to action for Alonso. He looked in good nick despite not having played for the club since September.
Judging by his performance on the night, it is fair to say Lampard made the wrong call to drop him.
