Frank Lampard challenges Mason Mount to score more goals for Chelsea

Speaking to Chelsea TV (h/t Metro), Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has urged Mason Mount to add more goals to his game.

The Blues youngster ended his 19-game goal drought with an 18th-minute strike against Morecambe on his birthday. The goal set the tone for a comfortable 4-0 win on the night.

The strike was Mount’s second of the season. With 24 games played so far, it is fair to say that he will need to put up better numbers. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Mason Mount opened the scoring for Chelsea against Morecambe

The 22-year-old is a regular for the Blues. While he does a lot on the pitch, he will need to back up his performances with the end product.

“Mason can, should and will score more goals from midfield.”

The likes of Kai Havertz are yet to hit top gear. While the German did score on the night, he will need to start doing it on a consistent basis. With him still settling in, the onus to score from the midfield falls onto Mount.

Both Kai Havertz (L) and Timo Werber (R) also scored against Morecambe

Lampard appears to have great faith in his young protege, though. Not many players become a regular for Chelsea by the age of 22. Mount doing so is a testament to Lampard’s belief in him.

“It was his birthday today and because of the amount of games he’s played already in his young career, you forget how young he is.”

A regular scorer from the middle of the park, Lampard is well-versed in the art of scoring. Mount will do well to learn from the Blues legend as his career starts to take off. The midfielder’s best years are yet to come, hopefully, he will have a lot more goals to celebrate when he gets there.

Mount does have the ability to score crucial goals. The importance of his opener last night cannot be underestimated.

Having come into the game after a torrid run of results, it was key that Chelsea took the game by the scruff of the neck. Mount’s early strike helped us do just that. Hopefully, it will become a regular feature in the years to come.
