Lyon striker Moussa Dembele was a player linked with a move to Chelsea in recent times.
The Blues, however. signed Timo Werner in the summer and the links to the French striker have gone cold since.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Dembele is in the final stages of signing for Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone has confirmed that the deal is in its advanced stages. Romano believes the agreement could be finalized as early as today.
Ironically, Dembele could step onto the Stamford Bridge pitch this season. With us set to face Atletico in the Champions League round of 16, Dembele could very well face off against us.
The 24-year-old has failed to hit his usual heights this season. With just one goal in 16 appearances so far, it is understandable why his stock appears to have fallen.
The Blues currently have three senior strikers at their disposal. Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham, and Olivier Giroud have all impressed in various capacities.
Giroud is arguably the most reliable of the lot. However, at 34, he is also in the final months of his contract. Bringing in a replacement for him could be on the agenda in the summer.
With Werner not having adapted completely and Abraham still a work in progress, another option upfront will serve us well.
Dembele has played in the UK before with Fulham and Celtic. At just 24, he has his best years ahead of him and can improve. Whether Chelsea will rekindle their interest in the future remains to be seen.
After all the Blues and Atletico have had a number of strikers play for them in recent times.
