Chelsea to part ways with manager Frank Lampard

According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Chelsea are all set to part ways with manager Frank Lampard.

The Blues legend has been under pressure after a poor run of results in December and January. While it was expected that he would be given time to turn things around, that does not appear to be the case.

Confirmation regarding his departure could be done as early as today. Chelsea players have been told not to report for training until the afternoon. Lampard may already have taken his last session in charge.

Lampard took over from Maurizio Sarri in 2019. He massively overachieved in his first season leading us to the top four finish and also the FA Cup final.

A massive summer splurge saw him bring in a number of top stars who have all gone on to experience varying levels of success. This splurge led to an increase in expectations, something Lampard has failed to live up to.

Julian Nagelsmann remains a priority target, however, the prospect of him quitting RB Leipzig midseason is remote. This could force Roman Abramovich to bring in an interim manager or hire free agents such as Thomas Tuchel or Massimiliano Allegri.

Julian Nagelsmann will not leave RB Leipzig midseason

No exceptions!

A club legend, there are few players in Chelsea history more adored than Lampard. Abramovich has so far fired 13 managers on his watch, a number that could rise as early as today.

Unlike the others, Lampard’s dismissal could split opinion amongst fans. More so, since it comes a day after the 3-1 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup.

Lampard will be the 14th managerial casuality under Abramovich

Whoever the club brings in, it will all be for nought if we do not have a long term plan in place. If a club legend can be dismissed under such circumstances, it is fair to assume that his replacements would be assured even lesser leeway.

It was reported earlier that Lampard would be given three matches to save his job. While he passed the test against Luton, all it appears to have gained him is a stay of execution.

It remains to be seen what happens now.
