As reported by the Evening Standard, Chelsea have reported positive cases of Covid-19 ahead of their Premier League game against Manchester City on Sunday. However, manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that there are no new cases involving players.
Over the past couple of weeks, there has been a surge in positive test cases for Covid-19. This has already led two matches being called off, with Manchester City themselves being involved in one such incident.
Indeed, Manchester City’s league game against Everton at Goodison Park had to be postponed this past Monday.
After having closed down their training facilities and carried out further tests, the Cityzens returned to training on Wednesday. However, they will be without as many as five players for Sunday’s game due to Covid-19.
Speaking ahead of the game, Lampard confirmed that Chelsea, too, have had a couple of positive tests within the club. Although, the gaffer insisted that none of them were within the squad.
“We know that Manchester City had some positives within their training ground. We’ve had a couple ourselves, but not on the playing staff. That’s the current situation.”
Lampard then went on to insist that safety is of paramount importance amid rising cases in the country. He also added that it was up to the Premier League, the Government and the FA to decide if a break was needed.
“I think safety has to be paramount. I think the football authorities, Premier League, government and everybody has to be clear that it would be beneficial to stop and do a ‘circuit breaker’ or something.”
Chelsea have won just one in their last five in the Premier League. Lampard will need his team to step up and deliver against Man City on Sunday.
