Rob Green believes Chelsea are more likely to offer Olivier Giroud a new contract instead of selling him

Speaking to Stadium Astro (h/t Mirror), former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green said that Chelsea are more likely to tie Olivier Giroud to a new contract rather than sell him in the upcoming January transfer window.

Giroud had a tough start to this campaign. The Frenchman has been third-choice for Frank Lampard behind Tammy Abraham and new signing Timo Werner.

His lack of game-time with the Blues has led to rumours about him leaving Stamford Bridge in the next transfer window. However, his situation with regard to playing time has improved recently.

After bagging 4 goals away to Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League earlier this month, Giroud has started in all 3 of Chelsea’s most recent Premier league games.

The Frenchman has been vital for the club and has repaid Lampard’s trust whenever he has had the chance. Despite Chelsea losing twice in a row, Giroud has scored twice in his last 3 league starts.

Rob Green believes that Frank Lampard understands Giroud’s worth. That is why he says Chelsea will rather offer him a new contract than sell him in January. (h/t Mirror)

Green believes that Chelsea will try to fend off Giroud’s potential suitors, and might offer a lucrative contract to Giroud to make him stay.

“I think there will be suitors and people will come in for him and it’s in Chelsea’s interests to keep him there. That might include giving him a new contract.”

The former Chelsea goalkeeper, who won the UEFA Europa League with the club in 2019, says that Giroud will not be driven out of the club and can stay at the club if he desires to.

“As long as he wants to be there he should be there.”
