Chelsea full-back Reece James took to Instagram (h/t Daily Mail) to defend under-fire manager Frank Lampard after the team’s 1-1 draw to Aston Villa.
The Blues had only 48 hours after their defeat to Arsenal to prepare for their match against the Villans.
Lampard made 6 changes to the team that lost in the weekend, and things looked good when Olivier Giroud scored in the first half to make it 1-0. However, a defensive mix-up saw Chelsea concede a 50th-minute equalizer.
The game ended 1-1, ensuring that the Blues’ dismal league run continues. Chelsea have won just 1 out of their last 5 league games, which has brought the spotlight on the manager.
Reece James was one of the 6 players rested after the defeat to Arsenal. Cesar Azpilicueta deputized for the Englishman, who is currently recovering from a knee injury.
James posted a lengthy caption along with a photo of manager Frank Lampard after the draw against Villa. In it, the 21-year-old asked the Chelsea fans to keep faith and not lose sight of the long-term goals.
“I feel for Frank because a lot of people are putting him under pressure. But what people aren’t remembering is that we are in a rebuild…”
The youngster asked the fans to stick by the club and not turn against their manager and players if the club does not “win 5-0 ever week”. In addition, he said that good things will come but only with the fans play their part.
“These things [winning titles] will come in the future if we play our part in supporting our players…”
James was also quick to defend new signings such as Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, saying that the new signings have a lot of readjustment to do in their lives and deserve time and patience from the fans. (h/t Daily Mail)
“Big names that have come in are just adapting to a new style of football, new language, new team mates and many other things…”
Such maturity and level-headedness coming from a 21-year-old is refreshing to see.
The Blues will have an opportunity to set things right when they play against Manchester City this weekend in the league, although the fixture hangs in the balance amid a coronavirus outbreak within the City squad.
