A report by French outlet Le10 Sport (h/t ESPN) claims that Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille have joined the race to sign Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.
Giroud’s transfer has been a topic of discussion in recent weeks. The rumours raged on especially before he was getting regular gametime at the club.
Now, the Frenchman has started in Chelsea’s last 3 league games after netting 4 goals against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League.
He has impressed whenever he has been given the chance to. However, he still remains third in the pecking order below new signing Timo Werner and youngster Tammy Abraham.
The 34-year-old knows that he will need playing time to feature for France in the UEFA European Championships next summer. This could impact any decision that the striker makes in January.
The report states that Olympique Marseille are interested in bringing the player back to Ligue 1. He had earlier spent two seasons at Montpellier HSC, with whom he won the league in 2012.
Marseille would face competition from Serie A club AC Milan, who are also keen on signing the striker. (h/t ESPN)
Giroud is in the last 6 months of his Chelsea contract. This leaves him open to discuss terms with non-English clubs in January over a free transfer in the summer.
All 3 of Giroud’s 3 league starts have come after he netted 4 goals in Sevilla. It seems like Frank Lampard is willing to integrate the Frenchman into the first-team picture.
He already has 8 goals for Chelsea despite starting in just 5 matches in all competition this campaign. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The Frenchman would be hoping to feature in some capacity tonight. A win would see Lampard’s men go up to 5th in the table.
