Former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz is unfazed by the price that Chelsea paid for him.
The 21-year-old German was one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer, with the Blues landing him for £71m (h/t Eurosport).
Havertz took a bit of time to adjust to his new surroundings but has four goals and two assists in his short Chelsea career.
Chelsea spent big to land one of the brightest talents in the world. However, Havertz doesn’t worry about his price-tag when performing on the pitch. The 21-year-old was speaking to SportBild and didn’t want to think about how much he is worth (h/t Eurosport):
“Well, that’s the way the football market works. I can’t help. That’s why I don’t put any emphasis on it.
“I try to play football well. I don’t have my transfer fee in my head when I go out on to the pitch.”
Havertz also set some lofty sights as he spoke about how young the team was. Chelsea signed rising talents such as Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech, and Havertz claimed winning titles at Stamford Bridge meant more to him:
“We want to build something here and attack. This motivates me. And then, a title with Chelsea is just worth more.
“A transfer like this doesn’t happen overnight. I had to go through all options and things which are important to me. I was watching a lot of Premier League on TV anyhow and knew Chelsea really well.”
Working under Frank Lampard also has its perks. Lampard was known for scoring goals throughout his Chelsea career and Havertz added that he was impressed by the manager.
The German also spoke about how close he is to countryman Werner:
“Sure, we do a lot of things together. This helps a lot. But we must also go our own ways to fully settle here.”
Havertz is a talent and getting him to Stamford Bridge is a bit of a coup. He has a lot of quality years left in him and will only improve under the gaffer.
We are yet to see the best of him but there have been glimpses of his quality. Lampard has some fantastic players at his disposal and it will be interesting to see how we fare for the remainder of the campaign.
