Input from Petr Cech driving Chelsea to secure Edouard Mendy

According to The Mirror, Chelsea are set to step up their efforts to sign Edouard Mendy following promising input from Petr Cech.

The former custodian is now the club’s technical director. He played for Rennes before making the move to Stamford Bridge in 2004.

Cech, in conjunction with Lampard, has considered a number of keepers this summer. This includes Burnley star Nick Pope, Borussia Dortmund’s Roman Burki, Lille shot-stopper Mike Maignan, and Ajax Amsterdam’s Andre Onana.

Chelsea to step up efforts to sign Edouard Mendy

The duo have now decided to limit their focus to Mendy, who is coming off an excellent season for Rennes. He helped the club reach third place in the table before the season came to a premature end. This saw them qualify for next season’s Champions League.

According to the report, Mendy will cost Chelsea around £18million and could become the club’s sixth major signing of the summer.

The Blues have brought in five first-team stars including Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, and Kai Havertz.

Roman Abramovich has backed Lampard to the hilt in what has been an exciting summer at the Bridge. Adding Mendy to our list of signings will help address another key weakness from last season.

Mendy has so far spent his whole career in France, making over 100 appearances in the top two tiers of French football. The 28-year-old signed for Rennes last summer and has since played 34 times for the club. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Now that we have strengthened on paper, it will soon be time to translate that into performances on the pitch.

The Blues finished wide off Liverpool and Manchester City last season. With a stronger squad at his disposal, there is real optimism that Lampard can help close the gap at the top.
