According to the Express, Sevilla are keen on Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso.
The La Liga giants are led by Julen Lopetegui. The former Spanish national team boss has a good idea of Alonso, having given him his international debut.
According to the report, Los Palanganas are keen on a new left-back this summer. They are set to make a bid of about £18million for Alonso.
Although Sevilla had the excellent Sergio Reguilon in their ranks, the player was on loan from Real Madrid. Although Los Blancos are open to a deal, competition for the player is high. (h/t Daily Star)
The left-back position had been a source of bother for Frank Lampard last season. However, the club recently signed Leicester City star Ben Chilwell.
The 23-year-old looks set to be the club’s first-choice left-back next season. Alonso would at best be the second-choice behind the Englishman.
Brought in by Antonio Conte, he has made 149 appearances for the Blues and has scored 22 goals and 18 assists. The Spaniard has made just 29 appearances this season.
Alonso enjoyed a resurgence of sorts just before the suspension of the league season. He has struggled since the restart, necessitating Chelsea’s chase for Chilwell.
With Emerson Palmieri on his way out, Alonso and Chilwell will be the only specialist left-backs at the club. The prospect of also losing the Spaniard will leave us short-staffed at the back.
Chelsea will do well to keep Alonso, provided we are unable to bring in a replacement for him.
