Frank Lampard is well aware of the demands made of a Chelsea player. Having served as one himself with distinction, he knows no half measures will be accepted while donning the Blue shirt.
Now a manager, he will have to make hard decisions for the greater good of the club. It appears he is prepared to do just that this summer.
According to Sky Sports, the Blues boss is willing to sell as many as 10 players this summer in a mass clear out of Stamford Bridge.
Having arrived last summer under the cloud of a transfer ban, Lampard had to make do with the resources at his disposal. With the ban now overturned, he is free to build a team in his image.
It is a testament to his ability as a manager that Lampard not only developed youth but also got the best out of them to ensure a top-four finish.
With Champions League football on the agenda, Chelsea can now hope to attract high-quality players. This was exemplified as the club moved early to secure Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
Kai Havertz could soon join the duo. Chelsea’s business is far from done with a defensive shakeup expected.
According to the report, up to 10 players could make way for the newcomers. This includes a mix of fringe and first-team stars.
Those on the chopping block include Victor Moses, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater, and Michy Batshuayi. Neither of the four players are considered key players and the club will not miss much by parting ways. (h/t Sky Sports)
With the Blues defence leaking more goals than a leaking roof, a defensive shakeup is on the cards. It comes as no surprise that the defensive quartet of Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christiansen, and Kepa Arrizabalaga are all looking at uncertain futures. (h/t Sky Sports)
Of these Kepa is the biggest name given the world record fee it took to bring him to the Bridge. The Spaniard has, however, failed to impress and has often been a liability.
The fact that Lampard is willing to call it quits on Kepa could be a hint that under him, you will have to either perform or perish.
The fact that he does not blindly go along with a star’s reputation bodes well for the club. It also ensures players are kept on their toes and not allowed to slack off.
Jorginho is another player who could leave the Bridge this summer. The Italian’s sale could help fund a move for Declan Rice. According to the report, Chelsea hope to recoup around £40m from Jorginho’s sale. (h/t Sky Sports)
The winds of change appear to be blowing around Stamford Bridge. It remains to be seen how many of the club’s targets Lampard can sign. Or indeed how many he will eventually be let go.
Failure is not an option at the Bridge and some players are bound to find it the hard way.
