According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United have taken pole position ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City in the race to sign Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell.
The 23-year-old Chilwell has emerged as one of the top transfer targets for Chelsea heading into the summer transfer window.
It is no secret that the left-back slot has been a problematic one for us this season. Neither of Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri have been convincing enough, prompting manager Frank Lampard to use Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back.
Furthermore, the club is ready to offload Emerson, amid interest from Inter Milan, where former Blues’ boss Antonio Conte is seeking a reunion with his compatriot.
Chilwell, to that end, would have been an ideal target. The Leicester City academy graduate has grown into one of the best left-backs in the Premier League over the past couple of years, establishing himself as the first-choice for club and country.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed an impressive 2019/20 campaign for Brendan Rodgers’ side, grabbing three goals and four assists in 33 matches across all competitions.
However, if the report from The Sun is to be believed, we are now trailing Manchester United in pursuit of the eleven-time capped England international.
Chelsea have already made quite the splash in the transfer market. The signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner ought to boost our attacking department a great deal.
However, defence, especially the left-back slot, needs to be strengthened before the next season commences.
Chilwell, despite having a few detractors, would be a major improvement on our current options. Valued at £60m, as per the report, it remains to be seen if the club are able to beat both the Mancunian outfits to his signing.
