Frank Lampard explains reasons behind Kepa Arrizabalaga’s relegation to the bench

Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Express), Frank Lampard has justified his decision to drop Chelsea number one Kepa Arrizabalaga for the crunch game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Blues went into the game with their Champions League hopes still in the balance. Lampard ensured they remained masters of their destiny by making a bold call prior to kick-off.

Willy Caballero started ahead of the Spaniard who is the world’s most expensive keeper. It proved to be an inspired decision as Chelsea not only won but also kept a clean sheet.

“It’s a choice, just a choice. Kepa’s had some difficult times so I’m playing Willy.”

Frank Lampard is not convinced by Kepa Arrizabalaga

Kepa has endured a difficult time at the Bridge. Although capable of the spectacular, his inability to maintain a sense of consistency has seen him fall out of favour with both Lampard and the fans.

The Blues boss did not hold back in admitting that his number one has had difficult times. Just a few days ago, he was at the end of five goals plundered in by Liverpool.

It can also be argued that Lampard wanted to save his star from beating former Chelsea goalkeeper Dimitri Kharine’s unwanted record. The Russian holds the unenviable record of having let in the most goals for Chelsea over the course of a Premier League season.

Willy Caballero replaced Kepa in goal

Another side of the argument can also claim Lampard’s action shows a lack of faith in his keeper. After all, Kepa was just two goals worse off.

It could prove to be the final nail in the 25-year-old’s Chelsea career. According to the report, Lampard is keen to move him on in the summer transfer window.

The Blues are keen to compete for the top prizes next season. It will be difficult to do so given how porous we are at the back.

The keeper is the last line of defence and must be reliable and consistent. Neither of this can be attributed to Kepa. It could be the case that the Spaniard has played his final game for the club.
