Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Express), transfer expert Ian McGarry has claimed that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is desperate to sign a centre-back in the mould of former teammate and club legend John Terry.
It doesn’t need to be said that Terry is one of the best centre-backs of the modern era. Under his leadership, Chelsea reached great heights in the past fifteen years or so.
However, following his departure in 2017, the club has lacked the presence of a natural leader at the heart of the backline. This, along with the exit of Gary Cahill last summer, has weakened our defence.
The likes of Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Fikayo Tomori have been highly inconsistent over the course of the campaign, while Antonio Rudiger has had to deal with injury issues as well.
So it is imperative that we strengthen our defence in the upcoming summer. And McGarry has claimed that Lampard is on the lookout for someone who can bring what Terry brought to the team during his playing days. (h/t Express)
“He’s absolutely desperate, as we’ve said repeatedly on the pod, to sign a commanding centre-half, a very vocal centre-half, very much – and it’s not unexpected – in the John Terry mould.”
Chelsea have already made quite the splash in the transfer market, with the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.
However, for us to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, a new defender who can have the kind of impact that Virgil van Dijk had at Anfield is a must. It will be interesting to see who the club go for to reinforce the backline.
