In an interview with the Guardian, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has welcomed the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, claiming that his addition will motivate the current forwards to do better.
Chelsea confirmed the signing of Werner from the German outfit earlier this week. The 24-year-old will arrive in a deal that cost us £47.5m, with the striker signing a five-year deal worth £170,000-a-week. (h/t Daily Telegraph)
Werner has been in terrific form for Leipzig in 2019/20, bagging a whopping 32 goals and 13 assists in 43 appearances across all competitions. Given his form and the outlay on his signing, it is all but certain that he is going to be our first-choice centre-forward come next season.
This means added competition for our current striker-contingent of Tammy Abraham, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi.
Earlier in the week, manager Frank Lampard sent a message to Abraham, stating that he must need to be ready for the competition. And now Giroud has reacted to Werner’s arrival, stating that it will only motivate the others to do better. (h/t Guardian)
“He is going to be a very good signing and more motivation for strikers.”
Given the increased competition, that is the sort of the attitude the players need to have. Giroud, 33, hasn’t had a lot of opportunities this season, but has been a model professional and stepped up when the club needed his services in the second half of the season.
Werner’s addition, along with Hakim Ziyech, will take our squad to a new level next season. A few more additions and we will be able back where he belong – at the top.
