According to the Telegraph, Chelsea are waiting on Willian and Pedro to sign short-term extensions until the season’s end.
The veterans look to be on their way out after a successful career at Stamford Bridge. With their current contracts up this month, the club are keen to see them commit till the end of the current campaign.
The duo are worried about injuring themselves during the run-in. This could hamper their ability to find a new club in the summer transfer window.
With just over a week to go until football returns, Frank Lampard could be without two of his veteran stars for the rest of the season.
A host of clubs are currently chasing us for the coveted position. The likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have returned to full strength and could pose a serious challenge.
In the midst of it, we still have to face the likes of Manchester City, Leicester City, Liverpool, Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. To put it into perspective, all of the top three and two of our top-four rivals.
With such a difficult run-in to negotiate, it is imperative that we retain our stars at least until the season ends.
The Blues have moved quickly to tie up a deal for Hakim Ziyech. Timo Werner also appears to be on board while we also chase Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz.
Our ability to attract players could be affected if we fall away from top-four contention.
There is a lot of excitement among Chelsea fans pertaining to next season. However, we still have the current one to negotiate and will need to end the campaign on a high.
Given that they are set to move on, Willian and Pedro’s hesitance is understandable. More so in the latter’s case as he has endured an injury-hit campaign.
But by not agreeing to stay on, they could very well be damaging the legacies they leave behind.
